Membership at St. John's

St. John's, like all Anglican churches, welcomes any person who has been baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit to receive communion – we affirm baptism in all Christian denominations. However, while receiving communion signifies membership of the Body of Christ, to become a member of St. John's and the Anglican tradition you also need to be confirmed by an Anglican Bishop.
Here are our beliefs concerning Baptism, Confirmation, and Membership of the church.

Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ's Body the Church. [Book of Common Prayer, p. 298]
After being baptized, the priest declares, "You are sealed by the Holy Spirit... and marked as Christ's own for ever. Amen." This means that in Baptism we are born again into the new life of Christ, and into the family of God; a new life received by faith.

Those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop. Those baptized as adults, unless baptized with laying on of hands by a bishop, are also expected to make [this] public affirmation of their faith. [Book of Common Prayer, p. 412]
In the 'mature public affirmation' of Confirmation, a baptized believer is empowered by the Holy Spirit for Christian life and ministry through the laying on of hands by the Bishop.

If you have already been baptized and confirmed but in a different Christian denomination – a denomination whose bishops are part of the Apostolic Succession – you will be Received (rather than Confirmed) by the Bishop, receiving the laying on of hands in the same way as a Confirmand.
Likewise, you can choose to reaffirm previously-taken confirmation vows before the Bishop. This is particularly appropriate for those who are returning to Christ after a period of being estranged from the Church, and seeking to publicly declare their decision to do so.

Having both been baptized and confirmed/received, you can formally be a member of St. John's Parish Church, which includes the right to vote (or stand) for Vestry, to serve as a Lay Reader, and to administer the Sacrament as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. If you were confirmed in another Anglican congregation, you will need to transfer your membership to St. John's. Please contact the Parish Office to do so.
