A Gift of Lent

Lent is an important time for Christians. It is a reminder that God’s love is big enough and strong enough to take away our sins. Every Lent we demonstrate our repentance by receiving the ashes, perhaps spending a little more time in prayer, and reconciling with others. We also might take on spiritual disciplines - giving up things that tempt us through fasting or taking on an extra devotion to enable ourselves to be better listeners to the Holy Spirit. Lent opens our eyes and shows us our weaknesses and our temptations and through those, God’s wonderful grace can be revealed to us more fully. Let's not miss this Lent's opportunity to start a new facet of our relationship with Jesus.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Ashes made from last years palms are blessed and used to mark the cross on your forehead. Ash Wednesday sets the tone for Lent with a focus on penitence, expressing our regrets for and turning away from sin.  The forty days of Lent refers to our Lord’s time of fasting in the wilderness; and since Sundays are never fast days, Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten Fast.
"Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ."
