Christmas Under the Oaks
Lessons and Carols

followed by chili, hot dogs & s'mores

Join us under the oaks by Walton Hall at 5 pm on Sunday evening, December 19, for Lessons and Carols. This will be followed by a meal of chili, hot dogs, and s'mores done over the fire. Bring your lawn chairs, a blanket, and start the Christmas season under the stars, listening to God's word and singing carols. We look forward to seeing you.

Christmas Pageant

No Christmas is complete without the children of St. John's leading us through salvation history to the manger in Bethlehem on Christmas Eve at 5 pm. With that in mind, we are taking sign ups for the pageant now for children aged 2 and up! Please contact Rob Schluter ( to sign your child up for a part in the pageant.

Prayer Vigil for SC Supreme Court Hearing Dec 8

The clergy and people of the Diocese are strongly encouraged to keep the coming hearing in your prayers as the date approaches. Pray first for the shielding of Mr. Runyan and his legal team as they prepare for this hearing. Pray also that they be granted divine wisdom in preparing their arguments. Pray finally for the Justices (Donald W. Beatty, John W. Kittredge, John Cannon Few, George C. "Buck" James) that they be granted divine clarity in their preparations, in the hearing and, in their final ruling.

Pray for: the legal team, for the Justices, for "the peace of God which passes all understanding to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7).

Almighty God, alone you sit upon the throne of grace giving righteous judgment: We, the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina, humbly ask for your favor in court hearings on December 8th; be present with the legal team, give them clarity and wisdom in the legal matters, knowing that no law is above your law and that no truth is above your truth; through him who shall come to be our true Judge, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

You can also join others in a virtual online vigil on Dec 7. and Dec 8. as well as an onsite vigil on Dec 8. from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Camp St. Christopher.

Sign up here on the signupgenius website for the Camp St. Christopher virtual prayer vigil.

Uganda Scholarships

For Ugandan children, the school year begins in early January, so St John's is beginning to collect scholarship funds for the coming year. Tuition is $150 for the YEAR! Please consider sponsoring a student-or two-in this critical work. Secular and Islamic pressure to lure children away from the faith is alive and well in Gulu so your help is increasingly important to the families we have been helping.

Hopefully we can have our usual March Mission Madness celebration in 2022 but it is helpful to the Diocese of Northern Uganda to have these scholarships in hand soon. Thank you for your amazing support of these families for the past 10 years!! Some of the children we have been supporting are now moving into advanced degrees thanks to our support! How exciting is THAT?!

Charleston County Youth Detention Center Christmas Collection

Photo by Paul Zoetemeijer on Unsplash
The Charleston County Youth Detention Center houses 13-17-year old males and females. St. John's would love to point the roughly 50 juveniles to Jesus by blessing them with grooming items as well as Christmas cards and most importantly your prayers this Christmas season.

We have purchased a red gift bag with St. John's Parish's name on it which will serve as the stocking and give us a bit more room for the supplies. If you are interested in donating some items, here is a list of what we will need:
  • Christmas cards - Please do NOT seal the envelopes. Only sign cards with your first name.
  • Toothpaste (full size for all items)
  • Deodorant (not spray type)
  • Hand lotion
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Body wash (no bar soap)
  • Socks

We have already taken care of the snacks that will go in each bag so that each person gets the same food item.

Collection bins will be at the Walton Hall and Guerry Hall entrances. All collections are due Sunday, December 12. For further details, you may contact Chrissy Binz or Libby Puckette.

Thanks in advance for your donations AND for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with those who are in jail this Christmas season.

At St. John's

December 5
Blessed Lord, who caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and the comfort of your holy Word we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

For Persecuted Churches

We pray for persecuted churches around the world. For the month of December we pray for the nation of Yemen. Heavenly Father, in the midst of radical Islamic persecution, violent tribalism, food shortages and starvation, we ask for your grace to provide and nurture all people in Yemen. We pray for Christians, who are forced to worship in secret, to be sustained by the presence of the Holy Spirit.
