Christmas Services

Christmas Under the Oaks
Lessons and Carols

followed by chili, hot dogs & s'mores

Join us under the oaks by Walton Hall at 5 pm on Sunday evening, December 19, for Lessons and Carols. This will be followed by a meal of chili, hot dogs, and s'mores done over the fire. Bring your lawn chairs, a blanket, and start the Christmas season under the stars, listening to God's word and singing carols. We look forward to seeing you.

Christmas Cards

We will have a "mailbox" in the narthex of Walton Hall and the church for Parishioner Christmas cards. Place your cards in the alphabetical slots and don't forget to check the mailboxes each time you are at church for Christmas greetings from your fellow parishioners.

Charleston County Youth Detention Center Christmas Collection due this Sunday

Thanks to all of you who have donated toiletries and written cards for the Charleston County Youth Detention Center. We are still in need of supplies so if you want to donate, it's not too late! This Sunday will be our final collection day. Please bring your donation to the bins in either Walton Hall or Guerry Hall.

As a reminder, the Charleston County Youth Detention Center houses approximately 50 youth, mostly male. We have purchased snacks for each bag. The toiletries needed are listed below. Christmas cards are greatly appreciated.
  • Christmas cards - Please do NOT seal the envelopes. Only sign cards with your first name.
  • Toothpaste (full size for all items)
  • Toothbrush
  • Deodorant
  • Hand lotion
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Body wash (no bar soap)
  • Socks

Thanks in advance for your donations AND for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with those at the Charleston County Youth Detention Center this Christmas season.

Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. - Hebrews 13:3.

'Tis the season to make a list and check it twice...see above. St. John's is making brownies for Haut Gap this year. Brownie mix and pans are provided. Please pick yours up this Sunday, make brownies as directed, buy wrapped candy, and bring it all back to church by Dec. 13th. Your help is needed to put bags together on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 10 am in Walton Hall. Come have a joyous time!

If you want to help distribute the brownie bags on Wednesday, December 15, please show up at the school by 10:30 am. Any questions, please contact Peggy Gervais or Sally Frazier.

Christmas Pageant

No Christmas is complete without the children of St. John's leading us through salvation history to the manger in Bethlehem on Christmas Eve at 5 pm. With that in mind, we are taking signups for the pageant now for children aged 2 and up! Please contact Rob Schluter (rob@stjohnsparish.net) to sign your child up for a part in the pageant.

Uganda Scholarships

For Ugandan children, the school year begins in early January, so St John's is beginning to collect scholarship funds for the coming year. Tuition is $150 for the YEAR! Please consider sponsoring a student-or two-in this critical work. Secular and Islamic pressure to lure children away from the faith is alive and well in Gulu so your help is increasingly important to the families we have been helping.

Hopefully we can have our usual March Mission Madness celebration in 2022 but it is helpful to the Diocese of Northern Uganda to have these scholarships in hand soon. Thank you for your amazing support of these families for the past 10 years!! Some of the children we have been supporting are now moving into advanced degrees thanks to our support! How exciting is THAT?!

Advent Kits Still Available.

Kits will be found in Walton Hall and the church. This Advent, we invite you to slow down, rest, and focus on Jesus with your family. We are providing guides that will bid you daily to light your Advent candles, say simple family prayers, read a short scripture, discuss how it points us to Jesus, and rest in Christ's never ending love. May this Advent be one of drawing near to the Savior who was born for us all.

At St. John's

Collect

December 12
O Lord Jesus Christ, you sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Grant that the ministers and stewards of your mysteries may likewise make ready your way, by turning the hearts of the disobedient toward the wisdom of the just, that at your second coming to judge the world, we may be found a people acceptable in your sight; for with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, now and for ever.

For Persecuted Churches

We pray for persecuted churches around the world. For the month of December, we pray for the nation of Yemen. Heavenly Father, in the midst of radical Islamic persecution, violent tribalism, food shortages and starvation, we ask for your grace to provide and nurture all people in Yemen. We pray for Christians, who are forced to worship in secret, to be sustained by the presence of the Holy Spirit.
